Today when I was picking Jake up from school. We were walking down the hallway and Jake points at another preschool student and says, "mom, that boy is black." I quickly walked him outside whispering, "we don't say things like that Jake." I was mortified! Once we got outside of the school, I explained to him that, "yes, the other boy's skin is darker than ours but he's just like mommy and Jake." Jake looks up at me and says, "okay, mommy!"
I guess I wasn't prepared to have explain this one. I want my boy to grow up knowing we treat everyone the same and just because someone has darker skin doesn't mean they are "different" inside. Today Jake showed me how innocent children can be and the importance of loving one another.
