School Readiness - Fall Progress Report

Kendall and I had our 1st parent/teacher conference this afternoon with Ms. Melissa. It was great to hear how well Jake is doing. We know we have a wonderful boy but it feels good to hear it coming from someone else too. She made sure to say the areas are all a work in progress.

Below are the 3 areas of development they based Jake's progress on. I've also listed a few examples of each area of development they have noticed with Jacob. Again this is all a work in progress.

1. Social/Emotional
  • Sense of Self - He says goodbye and joins activities, seeks familiar adult for help when needed, verbalizes feelings, is very quite in class and he asserts self with adult support.
  • Demonstrates Responsibility for Self and Others - Independently chooses one activity out of many uses self-help skills with occasional reminders, uses and cares for classroom materials, follows classroom procedures with prompting and follows classroom rules with reminders.
  •  Demonstrates Prosocial Behavior - Interacts easily with one other child, recognizes the needs/feelings of others, shares with prompts, accepts compromise and usually plays on his own.
  • Demonstrates Learning and Problem Solving - Makes repeated attempts to accomplish a task, stays involved in simple activities to completion, applies own experiences to classroom activities and works for 10 min. without being easily distracted with assistance.

2. Language Development and Early Literacy
  • Classroom Language Skills - Follows two or three step sequences of actions with a few reminders. Asks and answers questions and appropriately expresses self and participates in extended conversations.
  • Name Recognition - Recognizes first name in written form, Identifies letters in name by read and points.
  • Reading and Writing - Actively participates in story time and chooses to read on own.
  • Early Literacy Recommendations - Read at least 15 min. per day.
3. Cognitive Development
  • Numbers - Counts from 1 to 20, counts objects to 10, reads the numerals 0-10, points to the numerals 0-10
  • Colors - Names 10 basic colors {doesn't always know gray by name}, points to 10 basic colors
  • Shapes - Names 5 basic shapes {doesn't always know oval by name}, points to 5 basic shapes.
  • Fine Motor Skills - Still uses both hands, uses the quadriod pencil grip and is getting the hang of scissor use.
Overhaul we had a wonderful report! Jacob is one of the youngest in his class but is hanging in there right in the middle with the rest of them. He's learning and most of all loves going to school. In these few short months, we have seen such a change and can't wait to see what's to come.

Some areas we will work on a little more at home are his fine motor skills {scissor use, drawing a  person w/details}, rhyming words, and continue to have him write his name. We are so proud of our boy!!
